End GBV: HFDI Organizes Inter-School Debate to Enlighten Students

By Abisola Ariwodola,

In commemoration of 16 Days of Activism, Hope for Family Development Initiative, HFDI Nigeria organized an Inter-school debate at Zion Baptist High School in Osun state.

The aim of the debate was to enlighten students through the inter-school debate between Eyitayo Group of School and Zion Baptist High School, sponsored by CDC/ECEWS/Speed Project.

This event coincided with the 16 Days of Activism, a global campaign against gender-based violence (GBV).

The Safe Program Officer, Comfort Alagbile in her keynote address highlighted Gender Based Violence, GBV’s devastating impact.

She described GBV as a pandemic perpetuating inequality, discrimination and deprivation of women’s and girls’ rights. Comfort stressed unity, empowerment and engagement as crucial in ending GBV.

The HFDI Nigeria Safe Program Officer in Osun state advocated for education and economic empowerment of women and girls.

The debate topic themed: “Is Gender-Based Violence a Primarily Community Problem Rather Than an Individual Responsibility?” sparked intense discussion.

Zion Baptist High School students opposed the motion, arguing GBV is primarily an individual responsibility while Eyitayo Group of School students supported the motion, emphasizing GBV’s as community responsibility.

Judges evaluated student performances based on presentation, argumentation and relevance.

The debate organized by Hope for Family Development Initiative HFDI Nigeria gave a deep understanding of GBV among the students and its far-reaching consequences. By uniting and empowering individuals, we can create a safer, more equitable world.
