…used indigenous languages to deliver Health Education, Distributes Nose Masks to Vendors….
The Hope for Family Development Initiative, HFDI Osun, in collaboration with the students of Fountain University Osogbo conducted an assessment of sanitation and hygiene practices among market vendors at Sabo Market, a Hausa-dominated market in Osogbo.
The activity was part of HFDI’s ongoing community health education programme aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier market environment.
The team who met with Mr. Lukman, son of the Baba Oloja on arrival, obtained consent before proceeding, to address the vendors in Yoruba and Hausa languages, to create a friendly atmosphere, gain attention and encourage participation.
Health Education was provided on the importance of proper sanitation and hygiene, including keeping the market environment clean, proper waste disposal, maintaining personal hygiene, and preventing disease spread through poor environmental sanitation
The Sabo market which is predominantly occupied by Hausa-speaking vendors, were addressed on health education delivered in Hausa language to ensure clear understanding.
Similarly, Nose masks were distributed to vendors as part of the health promotion drive, and the team also met with the Iya Oloja and the Market Secretary.
The exercise provided insight into the vendors’ existing knowledge and practices regarding environmental sanitation. The respondents were encouraged to sustain proper hygiene practices and actively participate in keeping the market clean.
HFDI noted that the use of local languages significantly improved communication and understanding. The cooperation received from market leadership and vendors also contributed to the successful implementation of the activity.
The organization encouraged the Market vendors on regular sanitation activities to promote a clean, safe, and healthy market environment at Sabo and other markets across the state.
