Air Peace to Begin London Flights from Ogun’s Gateway International Airport This Summer

Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest airline, has announced plans to launch direct flights from the newly commissioned Gateway International Airport in Ogun State to London this summer.

The airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Allen Onyema, revealed the development after inspecting the airport facilities alongside Governor Dapo Abiodun. The inspection followed the official commissioning of the airport by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Onyema confirmed that Air Peace will operate flights to both London Gatwick and Heathrow airports, describing the move as a major milestone for Ogun State’s aviation sector. He praised the Gateway International Airport as “one of the best-equipped in Sub-Saharan Africa,” highlighting its 4-kilometre runway capable of accommodating large aircraft such as the Airbus A380. Air Peace plans to deploy its Boeing 777 fleet on the London route.

The airline chief noted that approval had been secured from the Minister of Aviation, stressing that the project should be viewed as a national asset rather than a state-only initiative.

Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, outlined plans to expand the airport’s ecosystem with an international conference and convention centre, as well as a 550-room five-star hotel. He said the developments would position Ogun State as a hub for global business and tourism.

Cargo operations have already commenced at the airport with Allied Air, while Ethiopian Airlines and another European carrier are expected to begin services soon. Abiodun projected that about 50 cargo flights would operate through the facility between April and the end of the year.

The governor also announced the establishment of Gateway Airlines, which has acquired two Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft to boost connectivity between Ogun State, Abuja, and other major Nigerian cities.

With these initiatives, Abiodun expressed confidence that Gateway International Airport could soon rank as Nigeria’s third busiest aviation hub, after Lagos and Abuja.
