UNIMED Appoints Professor Bamgboye as University Librarian, Targets Digital Transformation
The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, has appointed Professor Olusola Bamidele Bamgboye as its new University Librarian, bringing to the institution an experienced library administrator and scholar with more than two decades of professional experience.
Professor Bamgboye’s appointment took effect on Monday, 3 August 2026, following its ratification by the Governing Council at its Extra-Ordinary Meeting held on Wednesday, 15 April 2026. His tenure is for a non-renewable five-year term.
A Professor of Library and Information Science and a graduate of the University of Ibadan, Bamgboye has built a career spanning academic librarianship, university library administration, research and information management.
He served as Deputy University Librarian at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, from 2017 to 2023, having previously held several positions in the institution’s library system. Until his appointment at UNIMED, he was Vice-President and University Librarian at Hillside University of Science and Technology Library, Oke Imesi.
His appointment comes at a time when university libraries are rapidly evolving from traditional repositories of books into technology-driven centres for research, digital scholarship, innovation and knowledge sharing.
With his extensive experience, Bamgboye is expected to bring fresh impetus to the transformation of UNIMED’s library services, particularly in digital library development, electronic information resources, research support and improved access to up-to-date medical and health-science literature.
His experience in managing university libraries is also expected to strengthen services for students, lecturers and researchers, while promoting more efficient and user-friendly access to the information resources required for teaching, learning and cutting-edge research.
For a specialised institution such as UNIMED, where academic programmes and research are heavily dependent on current scientific and medical literature, the new Librarian’s expertise could prove particularly valuable in expanding access to electronic databases, strengthening research information services and supporting the University’s growing research community.
Bamgboye also brings a strong academic profile to the position. He has close to 50 peer-reviewed articles published in reputable local and international journals and has served as a reviewer for several academic journals.
He is a member of major professional bodies, including the Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN), the Nigerian Library Association (NLA) and the Association of Applied Information Management Professionals.
Beyond managing the University’s library resources, his mandate is expected to include positioning the library as a more visible and strategic partner in UNIMED’s academic and research activities.
His wealth of experience, research credentials and professional connections are therefore expected to enhance collaboration, innovation and knowledge management while helping the University build a library service that is responsive to the demands of modern medical education and research.
The appointment of Professor Bamgboye signals UNIMED’s determination to strengthen the information infrastructure that underpins its core mandate — producing highly skilled health professionals and advancing medical and health-science research.
With Bamgboye at the helm, the University library is expected to take on an increasingly strategic role in supporting scholarship, accelerating access to knowledge and contributing to UNIMED’s ambition of becoming a leading centre for medical and health-science education and research.
