HFDI Begins Sex Education, Gender Roles Enlightenment For Adolescent Boys in Kwara

Hope for Family Development Initiative HFDI under its GC7 N-THRIP project implementation, has began sex education, and Gender roles enlightenment for adolescent boys in Kwara state.
The activity tagged IMSAFER for adolescent boys held at schools such as, St Anthony junior secondary school, Ansar-ru-Deen junior secondary school, and Nairwa-ru-deen junior secondary school in Ilorin South local government area of the state, among others.

In a brief statement to herald the enlightenment, the Executive Director HFDI Ambassador Dr Aremu Stephen Akinyele stated that the time has come to sensitise adolescent boys on sex education and Gender roles, to protect the girl child.

According to him, such knowledge will help the Adolescents boys to know the right things and to become role model to others, he added that sex education and gender roles knowledgeable is beyond religion, hence the boy child being focused in the GBV campaign.

The HFDI facilitators Kamal Bello and Tunmise, who addressed the students on the topic JOURNEY TO MANHOOD, explained PUBERTY as the period of a person’s life during which their sexual organ develops. He further explained the puberty stage in boys and girls.

He listed the characteristic of puberty as rapid increase in height, voice cracks and becomes deeper, Pimples on the face, as well as large and broader shoulder, among others.

In addition, he sensitised them on the meaning of Gender and Sex, saying Sex is a biological term and word use to differentiate between a male and a female, while Gender is a societal belief or some act that meant purposefully for male or female.

Talking on Gender expectation for boys/men, he said they should be stronger both mentally and physically, be active and play sports, and should be the provider for their family.

The facilitator who told the Adolescents boys that the sensitisation will cover the project period, added that they will be equipped with needed information on their roles as well as gender.
