INEC Seeks Stronger Security Collaboration to Protect Voters with Disabilities in 2027 Elections
By Abisola Ariwodola,
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, has called for stronger collaboration between INEC, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to protect voters with disabilities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Abuja on October 23, 2026, Amupitan said every eligible Nigerian must be able to vote safely, freely and without discrimination.
He warned that intimidation, insecurity and inaccessible polling facilities could prevent persons with disabilities from exercising their voting rights.
The INEC Chairman urged security agencies to integrate disability inclusion into election planning, personnel training and emergency response.
He also called for the establishment of accessible complaint channels, joint security assessments and stronger coordination among electoral stakeholders before, during and after elections.
Amupitan said electoral inclusion is a democratic right and not an act of charity. He charged participants to translate discussions into practical measures that will protect voters and strengthen confidence in the electoral process.
