NPC Holds Peace Accord Bi-Lateral Engagements in Osogbo Ahead of Osun August 15 Governorship Election

As part of efforts to ensure a peaceful, credible and inclusive governorship election, the National Peace Committee, NPC, through the Kukah Centre has held a pre-election bilateral engagement and socialisation of the Peace Accord in Osogbo.
The event, sponsored by the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria, EU-SDGN* was held at Ideal Nest Conference Hall, Osogbo, ahead of the Osun State Governorship Election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
The bilateral engagement brought together key electoral stakeholders to promote dialogue, mutual understanding, and commitment to non-violence before, during, and after the polls.
The socialisation of the Peace Accord is aimed at getting key stakeholders such as religious organisations, media, political parties, candidates, security agencies, CSOs, traditional institutions, youth and women groups to publicly commit to peaceful conduct throughout the electoral process.
Facilitators from the Kukah Centre emphasized that elections should not be a do-or-die affair and urged all actors to prioritize the interest of Osun people above partisan interests.
The Bilateral Engagements reiterated Commitment to Peace, as: Stakeholders were prepped on the signing of the Peace Accord at a town hall meeting, after which all stakeholders must abide by the Peace Accord, and to call their supporters to order to prevent violence and hate speech.
Emphasis was made on the role of Security Agencies and the media professionalism, neutrality, and protection of voters and election materials.
Inclusive participation was also discussed and all stakeholders were encouraged to participate peacefully and have their voices heard, as flashpoints was analysed at the engagement.
Kukah Center reiterating the of the EU-SDGN Support reaffirmed its support for democratic governance in Nigeria and commitment to credible elections in Osun State. It noted that the socialization exercise will be followed by the formal signing of the Peace Accord by gubernatorial candidates.
At the interactive Bilateral Engagements, the National Peace Committee said the bilateral engagements captured the relevant stakeholders to deepen awareness and build consensus for peaceful elections.
Stakeholders at the meeting pledged to work together to ensure the August 15 governorship election is free, fair, and peaceful.
