NAWOJ Osun Condemns Political Violence, Demands Justice Over Death of Mrs. Taliat Simbiat in Iwo

…Says every Woman’s life matters, Osun women deserve safe politics….

The Osun State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, has frowned at the violent and politically-related death of Mrs. Taliat Simbiat in Iwo, calling it a tragic setback for democracy and women’s safety.

In a statement issued today signed by the Osun NAWOJ Chairperson Comrade Abisola Ariwodola, and Secretary Oluwaranti Ojewumi described the incident as “senseless, cruel, and a direct attack on the right of every citizen to participate in politics without fear of violence or death.”

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Mrs. Taliat Simbiat. No political ambition or disagreement should ever cost a woman her life. We frown at all forms of violence, especially those linked to politics,” the statement said.

NAWOJ urged the Osun State Police Command and other security agencies to carry out an immediate, impartial, and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mrs. Simbiat’s death in Iwo.

The association stressed that perpetrators, regardless of political affiliation, must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted under the law.

“Justice for Mrs. Taliat Simbiat will serve as a deterrent. We cannot build a peaceful Osun ahead of the August 15 governorship election if political actors and their supporters continue to use violence and intimidation,” NAWOJ added.

As a fore runner Women Journalists Association in the state, we call on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to shun hate speech, thuggery, and violence as campaigns intensify.

We also urge traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community heads in Iwo and across Osun state to preach peace and protect women from being used as tools or targets in political conflicts.

“*Women are not instruments of war. Women are builders of peace. Iwo must not become a case study of electoral bloodshed*,” the statement cautioned.

NAWOJ Osun commiserated with the family, friends, and people of Iwo over the loss, and pledged to monitor the case while intensifying advocacy against gender-based and political violence across the state.

“*Every woman’s life matters. Osun women deserve safe politics. Justice for Taliat Simbiat now*.”
