HFDI, IT Students Educate Commercial Drivers, Motorcyclists on Dangers of Dust and Air Pollution in Osogbo
….Nose Masks Distributed at Old Garage Motor Park as Part of Respiratory Health Campaign…
Commercial drivers and motorcyclists at Old Garage Motor Park, Osogbo, received health education on the dangers of dust and air pollution during a community awareness campaign..
The activity was carried out by IT students under the supervision of staff of HFDI Osun State office, as part of efforts to protect road users from occupational respiratory risks.
The session, delivered in Yoruba to ensure better understanding, focused on common sources of dust and air pollution around the park and the health problems linked to prolonged exposure.
Participants were educated on symptoms such as persistent coughing, difficulty in breathing, eye and throat irritation, asthma attacks, and other respiratory conditions.
The team also interviewed some drivers and Okada riders on how often they are exposed to dust, symptoms they experience, and protective measures they currently use.
As part of the intervention, nose masks were distributed as IEC materials. Participants were taught the correct way to wear them, especially in dusty environments.
Other preventive measures discussed included reducing exposure where possible, maintaining personal hygiene after work, avoiding smoking, and seeking medical attention for persistent respiratory symptoms.
The organisers said the activity successfully raised awareness and equipped commercial drivers and motorcyclists with practical knowledge and protective materials to reduce health risks.
HFDI noted that the involvement of IT students provided them with valuable practical experience in community health education interventions, the statement added.
