CAMPAIGN AGAINST DRUG ABUSE: HFDI COLLABORATES NDLEA, KWASSACA, SUG FED POLY OFFA

Hope For Family Development Initiative HFDI has collaborated Nigeria Drug and Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA, Kwara State Aids Control Agency KWASACA and the Students Union Government of the Federal Polytechnic Offa on campaign against drug abuse.

 

The sensitization and awareness program on drug abuse and Anti- social vice’s as well as immorality in our society, held at Aluta ground, mini campus of Federal Polytechnic Offa.

 

The programme attracted 10 students each from all the 52 polytechnic that participated in the Nigeria Polytechnic Games NIPOGA hosted by the Federal Polytechnic Offa..

 

In his remarks, the Area Commander of NDLEA, Hajia Fatima Abiola-Popoola highlighted drugs abuse to the students as a means using drugs in a way that is harmful or not meant to be used, he added that it also means using prescribed drugs in wrong ways (like taking too much or using someone else’s medication).

 

Represented at the programme, she further explained that Drug abuse can lead to addiction, health problems, It affects both the body and the mind, or even causes death.

 

The NDLEA described types of drugs as cocaine, Methamphetamine, DSP, Colorado, Elle, while stating it’s dangers as harmful to human lives, Brain damage which can lead to memory loss or mental illness like depression or  Psychosis, Heart and lung damage which can lead to high blood pressure and heart attack, liver and kidney damage which may fail due to overload and dehydration were listed as the diseases attributed to drug abuse.

 

All these harmful drugs were displayed by the NDLEA Personnel who advised the students to shun drug abuse and be a law abiding students.

 

Also speaking, the representative of Kwara State Aids Control Agency, KWASACA, Dr Emmanuel in his lecture urged the students to think of their future before engaging in drug abuse.

 

He added that anyone indulged in the abuse of drugs always have health issues in the future or even die in the process.

 

Representative of Society for Family Health, Mr Franklin talked about the causes and prevention of HIV, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which he said is primarily spread through contact with certain body fluids from a person who has HIV.

 

He listed the causes of HIV as unprotected sex, sharing of sharp objects with an infected person, blood transfusion, and mother to child transmission, while pinpointing the prevention as using condoms for protection during sex, getting  tested regularly, ensuring safe blood transfusions, and avoiding sharing of sharp objects.

 

Also speaking, representative of National Orientation Agency (NOA), advised the students to be a good citizen of Nigeria, promote unity and contribute to national development.

 

He urge the students to portray the image of our dear our country, Nigeria very well, especially on the social Media and he also advised the students to copy America by always praying for the country every blessed morning..

 

The sensitisation campaign programme was graced by the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Engr. Dr. Kamoru O. Kadiri, who thanked all the Agencies for sharing from their wealth experience to the polytechnic community.

 

Highlight of the campaign against drug abuse was the test carried out on the participating students, who volunteered to take the drug and hiv test at the programme.
