Nigeria @ 66: ‘The Nation’s Destiny Begins in Our Communities’ — Oba Makama

As Nigeria commemorates its 66th Independence Anniversary, the Olowu of Kuta Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Hammed Adekunle Oyelude Makama, Tegbosun III, CON, has underscored the importance of grassroots development and traditional institutions in shaping the nation’s future.

The monarch noted that the quality of people nurtured in individual communities contributes significantly to the destiny of the country, stressing that building a prosperous Nigeria requires attention to the values, character and responsibilities cultivated at the grassroots.

According to him, traditional rulers, as custodians of cultural heritage and community values, have an important role to play in raising responsible citizens who can contribute meaningfully to national development.

“Nigeria’s prosperity begins from each palace,” the monarch’s message emphasised, highlighting the connection between community leadership and the broader aspirations of the nation.

Oba Makama noted that traditional institutions serve as a bridge between government and grassroots communities, placing them in a position to support peacebuilding, community security, public enlightenment and the preservation of cultural values.

He explained that traditional rulers remain closely connected to the people and can help strengthen communication between communities and public authorities, particularly on issues affecting local welfare, security and social harmony.

The monarch, however, stressed the importance of collaboration between traditional institutions and government, noting that effective partnerships are necessary for traditional rulers to fulfil their responsibilities and contribute more meaningfully to national progress.

He maintained that the development of Nigeria requires a collective approach in which government institutions, traditional authorities and citizens work together towards shared national goals.

Oba Makama also acknowledged that the world is constantly changing, making it necessary for traditional institutions to respond to contemporary realities.
