HFDI Advocates Elimination of Child Labour, House-to-House Sensitization in Olode and Ayeoba Communities
Hope for Family Development Initiative, HFDI conducted a community dialogue and house-to-house sensitization at Olode and Ayeoba Communities in Osun State as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate child labour and strengthen child protection in cocoa-producing areas.
The intervention targeted parents, caregivers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to raise awareness on child rights and promote collective action against exploitative child labour.
During the interactive session, participants were educated that, in accordance with the Child Rights Act on a child ior person below the age of 18 years. They also learned that child labour refers to work that deprives children of their childhood, dignity, education, health, and overall development.
Facilitators emphasized that while age-appropriate household chores are acceptable, any work that interferes with a child’s education or exposes them to hazardous conditions constitutes child labour.
Participants identified common forms of child labour prevalent in the Communities as, Street hawking during school hours, Engaging children in farm activities, involving hazardous tools and agrochemicals, and sending children to fetch water during school hours.
The dialogue also examined drivers of child labour, which participants listed as poverty and financial hardship, limited access to quality education, large family sizes, cultural beliefs that encourage children to contribute to household income, parental unemployment, and inadequate awareness of child rights laws.
The participants acknowledged the roles of traditional rulers, religious institutions, schools, parents, the Community Child Labour Monitoring Committee, CCLMC, government agencies, and NGOs in safeguarding children.
They also highlighted challenges facing vulnerable households such as rising cost of living, inadequate educational support, poor access to social welfare, and limited awareness of government intervention programmes.
Community resources identified to prevent child labour include schools, health centres, Community Development Associations, religious organizations, local government social welfare offices, volunteers, and child protection committees.
Practical strategies agreed upon included, promoting regular school attendance, strengthening parental supervision, expanding livelihood support for vulnerable households, reporting cases of abuse, continuous sensitization, and fostering collaboration among leaders and CSOs.
Following the dialogue, the HFDI team moved across Olode and Ayeoba Communities for house-to-house engagement. Parents and caregivers were sensitized on the dangers of child labour, the importance of protecting children’s rights, and prioritizing education over exploitative work.
The visits helped address misconceptions, promote positive behavioural change, and strengthen community ownership of child protection.
The turnout beyond the initial target further demonstrated increasing community acceptance and commitment to child protection, and also increased awareness of child rights, existing protection structures, and available support services.
