The Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa in collaboration with the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) has inducted 45 graduates of Medical Lab Technician into the Council, with a call on them to uphold professional ethics, protect patients’ dignity and demonstrate compassion in the discharge of their duties.

The induction and oath-taking ceremony, held on Friday, October 30th, 2026, marked the 14th edition of the College’s induction ceremony for Medical Laboratory Technician graduates.

Representing the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Dr Donald Ibe Ofili, Dr Mrs Funmi Onakalu urged the newly inducted graduates to take their job seriously, remain open to learning and avoid preventable mistakes in the course of their professional practice.

The Registrar advised the graduates to embrace humility, honesty and discipline, stressing that the sensitive nature of their job demands strict adherence to professional standards.

He also encouraged them to pursue higher qualifications and explore opportunities for career advancement without compromising the ethical principles guiding the profession. He commended their lecturers for their academic and moral contributions to their training.

Delivering the induction lecture, MLS Fasasi Abdulkabir Abiodun, the Laboratory Logistics Officer and State Laboratory HIV Focal Person in Oyo State charged the inductees to treat patients with dignity and provide quality tests without discrimination based on religion, social status or cultural background.

“You must be a Technician that tells the truth. Do not document what you have not done,” Fasasi said, warning against falsification of records and other unethical practices capable of endangering patients’ lives.

He stressed that their jobs goes beyond routine job responsibilities, describing it as a calling that requires focus, competence, problem-solving skills and a willingness to translate theoretical knowledge into practical care.

According to him, “Good sample collection, correct labelling, proper storage, clean smears, careful pipetting is important. Most laboratory errors happen before the sample ever reaches the analyser. A technician who gets the pre-analytical stage right every time is worth more than one who can name every machine on the market.

“Learn to enter data correctly into a laboratory information system. Learn to keep an accurate stock register and report consumption on time. In my work on laboratory logistics, I have seen that the facilities that receive reagents regularly are usually the ones whose records are clean. Data is now part of your job, not an extra”. He stated.

Meanwhile, the Provost of the College, Dr Lateef Olarewaju Raheem in his speech urged the inductees to uphold integrity, discipline and accountability in the discharge of their jobs.

He also charged them to embrace continuous learning, teamwork, critical thinking and technological innovation to remain relevant in the evolving healthcare sector.

The Provost reaffirmed the College’s commitment to strengthening the MLT department and others in the College through improved laboratory facilities, upgraded equipment, staff development and the provision of current academic resources.

Joining the induction ceremony were graduates from Interlink College of Health Technology, Ijebu-Jesa, Millennium College of Health Technology, from Kwara and ETSU Ibrahim College of Health Technology, Patigi.
