…..Association Champions Menstrual Hygiene and Girl-Child Health….

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Osun State Chapter, has distributed sanitary products to schoolgirls in Osun as part of activities to mark its 37th anniversary.

The outreach, held at Unity School, Testing Ground area, Oluomo International School, Odi-Olowo area, and Higher Glory Standard High School, Dada Estate, all in Osogbo, targeted the selected schools in the state capital and aimed to promote menstrual hygiene management among adolescent girls.

Members of Osun NAWOJ led by the State Chairperson, Comrade Abisola Ariwodola engaged the students on proper menstrual hygiene practices and distributed packs of sanitary pads and other hygiene materials.

Speaking during the event, the State Chairperson of NAWOJ Osun, said the initiative was part of the association’s commitment to the health, education and wellbeing of girls. They noted that lack of access to sanitary products often forces many girls to miss school during their menstrual period.

According to the association, the 37th anniversary is being observed with community service projects across the country to highlight the role of women journalists in advocacy and social development in line with the directive of the NAWOJ National body Chaired by Comrade Aisha Ibrahim K. Bura, who at the kick off in Abuja said “we celebrate 37 years of courage, resilience, advocacy and unwavering commitment to the advancement of women, the girl-child and society at large.”

“For many girls, access to sanitary products can make the difference between attending school with dignity and staying at home during their menstrual period. By supporting this modest intervention, NAWOJ is once again demonstrating that our journalism is not only about telling the stories of society; it is also about using our collective voice and platform to make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.”

At 37, we celebrate not merely the years behind us, but the responsibility that comes with them. According to the National Chairperson, “we celebrate the pioneering women who laid the foundation. We celebrate every woman journalist who has carried the NAWOJ torch. We celebrate our members across the 36 states and FCT, whose commitments continue to keep the association strong, and We celebrate by giving back to the society.”

The School authorities and beneficiaries commended NAWOJ for the gesture, the School Principal Higher Glory Standard High School, Adeola ADEFOLAJU described the initiative as timely and supportive to the girl-child.

She commended NAWOJ for being the voice of women and children, for speaking truth to reality, and impacting the society positively, while she congratulated the association of it’s 37th anniversary.

In Osun state, the association used the milestone to draw attention to the need for government, private sector, and civil society to support policies that make menstrual hygiene products affordable and accessible.

The Osun NAWOJ leadership reaffirmed its commitment to continue advocacy and humanitarian projects that advance the rights and wellbeing of women and girls across the state.

NAWOJ was established in 1989 to promote the interests of women journalists, to give the female journalists a collective voice and to promote gender equity in the media and society. The 37th anniversary is being marked nationwide with activities focused on community service, advocacy, and empowerment.

Osun state chapter of NAWOJ is one of the states alongside Akwa Ibom, and Katsina state, who are beneficiary of NAWOJ @ 37, School Sensitisation and Distribution of sanitary products initiative by the National Secretariat.
