The objectives were to educate the public on the causes, symptoms, transmission, and prevention of malaria, to promote the use of preventive tools such as insecticide-treated mosquito nets and also to engage with the local community in a relatable and impactful manner.
The team organized an awareness rally held from Idi-iroko to Sasa market to attract attention and engage with community members. Placards and banners displaying messages about malaria prevention were displayed. Detailed on the biology of malaria, including the Plasmodium parasite, its human host and the female Anopheles mosquito as the vector was conveyed to the people.
Common symptoms of malaria such as fever, chills, headaches and body aches emphasis on early detection and preventive measures including environmental cleanliness, elimination of stagnant water and consistent use of mosquito nets and insecticides were mentioned.
The team communicated in different languages to effectively reach non-English-speaking members of the community. This effort helped bridge the communication gap and ensured the message was well understood.
The awareness team conducted a live demonstration using a mosquito net and mat, showing how to properly use them to prevent mosquito bites during sleep. The campaign was well-received by the community.
The participatory approach, use of different languages and practical demonstrations significantly increased public engagement and understanding.
The collective efforts of UNIOSUN students, backed by the Hope for Family Development Initiative Organization contributed to advancing the fight against malaria. With continued education and preventive actions, the vision of “Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine and Reignite ” can become a reality.
