Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy Among CALHIV, HFDI Holds Operation Triple Zero Session In Osun Health Facilities

By Titilola Olaniyan,

With the aim of reinforcing adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among CALHIV, providing psychosocial support, promoting the zero missed doses, Zero missed appointments, and Zero viral load objectives of the OTZ model, Hope for Family Development Initiative held Operation Triple Zero (OTZ) session at Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, and Ikire General Hospital, Osun State.

The session which held at the government facilities had Children and Adolescents Living with HIV (CALHIV) in attendance.

The activity was facilitated by the matrons at both facilities, while the Care and Support Officer, Ms. Alagbile Comfort, and the Monitoring & Evaluation Officer, Mr. Osunwuyi Oluwatobi, supervised under the Speed ECEWS project implemented by HFDI.

During the session, the matrons engaged participants with health talks emphasizing the importance of consistent drug use and the need to keep clinic appointments, and CALHIV were encouraged to overcome challenges such as stigma, peer pressure, and forgetfulness by adopting simple, practical adherence strategies.

The session was made lively and participatory through games and recreational activities, which not only promoted peer bonding but also created a relaxed environment that supported learning and sharing.

At Wesley Guild Hospital, HFDI also supported the facility with the establishment of a WASH stand, improving hygiene practices within the hospital and contributing to infection prevention and control.

The intervention recorded significant outcomes, as the CALHIV demonstrated improved knowledge on adherence and expressed renewed commitment to sustaining consistent ARV use.

The participants also actively engaged in both the educational and recreational aspects of the session, showing motivation to achieve viral suppression and live healthier lives.

Similarly, a household visit was conducted at Ikire General Hospital for one CALHIV, providing personalized support and ensuring that home-related challenges to adherence were properly addressed. These layered interventions reinforced both facility- and community-level support for CALHIV, directly contributing to improved health outcomes.
