Woman Passes Away After Power Outage During Surgery

A woman has tragically d+ed following a power outage and generator failure during s¥gery at Jummai Babangida Aliyu General Hospital in Minna, Niger State.

Her husband, UB Shehu, shared the heartbreaking story on Facebook, revealing how technical failures and delays disrupted the operation.

“35 minutes into my wife’s operation, Abuja Electricity Company (AEDC) commonly known as NEPA took light, and no fuel in the theatre Gen, at Jummai Babangida Aliyu General Hospital,” he wrote.

Shehu said he waited outside the operating theatre for nearly 11 hours—from 8:44 a.m. to 7 p.m.—remaining hopeful despite mounting delays.

“Minutes later, they brought the fuel after pouring it in the Gen, it had refused to start, they had to look for a mechanic. My wife was still inside the theatre,” he added.

According to him, the technician had to travel to Ogbomosho in Minna to purchase parts needed to fix the generator. Although power was restored after an hour, repairs on the generator continued, causing the operation to stretch far beyond the original schedule.

“Operation that wasn’t going to last for 90 minutes had taken from 4 pm to 7 pm,” Shehu explained.

Despite the dire situation, Shehu said a nurse reassured him that the procedure could continue:

“One of the nurses told me that I should not worry if the operation has continued even without light, they had an alternative (lamp or torch light) as usual,” he said.

In his emotional post, Shehu made it clear that he was not out to blame anyone but to raise awareness and prevent future tragedies.

“The narrator is not to target anybody, just to save lives and to avoid future occurrences,” he wrote. “I had reported my case to Almighty Allah already.”

Attempts to contact Dr. Bello Tukur, Niger State Commissioner for Secondary and Tertiary Healthcare, also failed, as calls and messages went unanswered.
