Following recent security alerts, the *Osun State Government* has approved the establishment of a Joint Security Taskforce, JTF, to strengthen response and early warning systems against threats to lives and property across the state.
The decision was taken at the State Security Council meeting convened on Wednesday by Governor Ademola Adeleke and presided over by the Deputy Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi.
The newly deployed Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Zungura, attended the meeting in person alongside other heads of security agencies in the state.
Declaring the meeting open, the Deputy Governor conveyed Governor Adeleke’s goodwill to the service commanders and commended them for their steadfastness during recent security challenges.
He said the governor is committed to providing all necessary logistics to ensure a smooth take-off of the JTF and to further empower security agencies to protect residents throughout Osun State.
The Deputy Governor who was accompanied by the Attorney General, Hon. Wole Jimi-Bada; Head of Service, Elder Ayanleye Aina; and Special Adviser on Security, Mr. Samuel Ojo, also called on traditional rulers to sustain local security oversight in their domains.
According to the statement signed by the Hon. Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, the Council, after hours of deliberations, moved to allay residents’ fears, noting that Osun State remains safe and secure.
Residents were urged to be extra vigilant, particularly in churches, mosques and schools, with stakeholders tasked to put additional security measures around their premises.
The Council also called for timely intelligence sharing by members of the public to help security agencies forestall possible attacks by suspected terrorists and bandits.
The Nigeria Police, in conjunction with other security agencies, were directed to be on 24-hour red alert to curtail threats.
At the meeting, an agreement was reached between the Ministry of Justice, the Nigeria Police, and the DSS to collaborate in ensuring that all suspects are properly investigated and prosecuted without delay.
The Council commended CP Zungura for instituting policing reforms since his assumption of office and for attending the security meeting in person.
