HFDI POINTS SURVIVAL WAYS WITH GENDER NORMS TO ADOLESCENT GIRLS

With Gender norms referring to societal expectations and rules surrounding behaviors, interests and roles deemed appropriate for individuals based on their gender, Hope for Family Development Initiative HFDI has pointed out survival ways to Adolescent Girls in Kwara state.

The organisation with the mandate of protecting women, children, adolescents, vulnerable and the marginalized in the society believes that the knowledge of gender norms can significantly affect people in various ways.

The HFDI team highlighted self – Identify and expression as one of the factors with which people may feel pressured to conform to traditional gender roles, limiting ability to express themselves freely, citing as example, boys being discouraged from showing vulnerability or engaging in activities perceived as feminine, while girls may be pushed away from assertiveness or physical play.

Also, Internal Conflict whereby people who do not identify the gender norms assigned to them may experience confusion, anxiety, or distress regarding their identity was listed alongside socialisation which can dictate acceptable behavior within peer groups, adding that boys and girls may segregate themselves based on these norms, which can hinder cross-gender friendships and limit social skills.

Bullying and isolation was picked to lead to negative mental health outcomes, while emotional suppression leads to difficulties in emotional regulation and expression, thereby having long-term effects on mental health, contributing to issues like depression and anxiety.

Furthermore, role expectations was emphasized whereby roles within the family structure based on gender, which can affect our views on partnership, parenting, and household responsibilities in adulthood was elucidated.

HFDI team maintained to the adolescent girls that they can tackle the effects of gender norms through various strategies which empowers them to challenge stereotypes and advocate for equality.

The female gender were charged to improve their education and pass the knowledge to their peers about gender norms and implications, understand the origins and effects, Build Confidence with activities that boost self-esteem and self-efficacy, such as sports, arts, or leadership programs.

The HFDI team reiterated that confidence can empower the girls to voice their opinions and stand against stereotypes, while adding that it is important for them to have good communication skills to articulate thoughts and feelings effectively.

This according to them can be buttressed with engagement with families, via open dialogues with family members about gender norms and expectations, hinging that discussing these issues at home can lead to greater understanding and support.
