Chidimma, ‘Go Home’: South Africans Protest Outside Cape Town Court Over Nigerian Beauty Queen’s Immigration Case

Supporters of the March and March movement took to the streets of Cape Town, demanding that beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina leave the country, as the Cape Town Regional Court prepared to deliver judgment in her immigration battle.
Videos and reports from the scene showed protesters gathered outside the court, singing and chanting. Some carried banners that read: She claimed Nigeria and was crowned Ms Nigeria, and Illegal immigrants are a burden in our country.
Tension rose when Chidimma Adetshina Adetshina arrived at the court venue. She was immediately swarmed by reporters and protesters and had to run into the court to evade them.
The demonstration was held as the court heard arguments on whether authorities could detain her pending possible deportation.
Adetshina first came into the spotlight as a Miss South Africa finalist. She withdrew from the 2024 Miss South Africa competition after public backlash, with many South Africans rejecting her participation, claiming her father is Nigerian and therefore she is Nigerian.
She was later chosen by Nigeria to contest in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, which she won.
In June 2026, Adetshina was arrested by South African authorities who alleged that she had entered the country through the Lebombo border from Mozambique despite previously being declared a prohibited person.
She is now challenging the government’s attempt to detain her pending deportation. Her legal team has disputed the authorities’ position.
The Cape Town Regional Court is expected to rule on the matter today.
The case has drawn significant public attention in both South Africa and Nigeria, reigniting debate over citizenship, immigration, and representation in national pageants.
