WHEN RIGGING SERVES NO ONE

WHEN RIGGING SERVES NO ONE

By Jide Alofe

Governor Seyi Makinde recently warned that anyone attempting to rig the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State will be met with “madness.” The truth is simple: rigging hurts. It crushes destinies, it steals choices, and it weakens trust in the system.

But let’s be honest with ourselves — many people only see rigging as injustice *when it works against them*. When it favours their camp, they suddenly become quiet. That selective outrage is one of the biggest enemies of our democracy.

With Osun State’s election approaching and the general elections not far off, Nigeria deserves a process that is free, fair, transparent, and beyond manipulation. Even if perfection is difficult, an election where the true will of the people prevails is far better than one contaminated by rigging.

And just as rigging is dangerous, weaponizing the judiciary to overturn genuinely popular mandates is equally destructive. That conversation is for another day — but the message remains clear: *our democracy cannot grow on shortcuts.*

*Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)* must rise to its responsibility. Nigeria needs elections that are credible, untainted, and respected home and abroad.

Let’s get it right — for once, for all, for everyone.
