NAWOJ Trains Members With NewsAssist AI To Achieve Professional Excellence

The National Secretariat of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) under the leadership of the National Chairperson, Hajia Aisha Bura successfully hosted an online workshop on the transformative power of NewsAssist AI, themed “NewsAssist AI Beyond the Byline: Exploring AI’s Role in Journalism and Investigations” on Friday, July 4, 2025.

 

The workshop which was part of the objectives of the associations’ leadership in ensuring that members are trained to achieve professional excellence, provided NAWOJ members worldwide with complimentary access to NewsAssist AI, an innovative AI-powered platform founded by Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi to support newsrooms and journalists in enhancing their workflow and reducing stress in news story production.

 

The training led by the Deputy National Chairperson, Dr. Lilian Okonkwo Ogabu, and the co-convener Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi, a renowned investigative journalist and founder of ‘The Colonist Report UK and Africa’, highlighted the significance of Artificial Intelligence in journalism for sustained growth.

 

Dr Lilian Okonkwo-Ogabu in her welcome remarks commended the participants for leveraging on the involving technology and desiring to acquire knowledge on AI. She also assured all that the association will subsist on its collaboration with NewsAssist AI to empower the female journalists across the country.

 

With Elfredah’s expertise in environmental and climate investigations, as well as her innovative approach to AI-powered journalism, she provided invaluable insights to the participants.

 

According to Elfreeda Kevin, NewsAssist AI app can transcribe about four languages to assist the journalist, and it also helps saves recorded audios.

 

She used the platform to urge the female journalists to get more familiar with Google, Gemini and other AI apps aside ChatGPT.
