Breastfeeding And Family Planning: HFDI Holds Sensitisation Outreach In Osogbo

Hope for Family Development Initiative (HFDI) has conducted a sensitisation outreach at Odi-Olowo Primary Health Centre (PHC), Osogbo on breastfeeding and family planning.

The outreach aimed to raise awareness on the importance of breastfeeding and to educate women on the various types of family planning methods available.

The sensitisation session was facilitated by HFDI representatives, Sangodele Yemi and Ajayi Itunu, with the active participation of Industrial Training (IT) students from Osun State University (UniOsun), who supported the outreach as part of their community health engagement in Osun state.

During the session, the HFDI team also provided supervision and guidance to the IT students, to enhance their learning and practical exposure at the event which engaged nursing mothers, expectant mothers and health workers within the facility.

The topic of breastfeeding was broadly discussed, including its benefits for both mother and child, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued breastfeeding up to two years or beyond, and participants were encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences, creating a lively and educative environment.

The team addressed family planning methods such as implants, injectables, intrauterine devices (IUDs), oral pills, condoms and natural methods, and also emphasised the importance of informed choice, while also debunking prevalent myths, and they encouraged couples to consult healthcare providers to identify the method most suitable for them.

The session was concluded with the charge that “the best gift you can give your child is breastfeeding”, thereby reinforcing the essential role of early nutrition in a child’s growth, development and lifelong health.
